HOLY COW!
My family is everywhere! It's highly entertaining to get emails and find out that seriously our family is everywhere. Let me try and get this straight: Mom--Caribbean, Dad--Indiana, Eric--Louisiana, Scott--Utah, Craig--New York with Grandpa George. Does that sound right? Goodness. I can't keep track of you all! Don't worry though, it's easy to keep track of me. I just chill here in Chardon, Ohio :)
Well Mom, I hope you are thoroughly enjoying the Caribbean weather but I'm really not that jealous because it's basically the same weather here....minus 70 degrees plus snow. Okay fine. I'm a little jealous. This morning at 6 am we had to scrape ice off our car for 10 minutes to be able to drive to the track and I realized that there was something sickening about scraping ICE off a car at SIX AM to go RUN TWO MILES in the 20 DEGREE weather. The irony is sickening. But Sister Debenham and I are in denial of the cold (or at least I am) and so I pretend it's nice and warm so that when the snow starts to really hit (supposedly today) then I can actually say it's starting to get chilly. My companion thinks I'm off my rocker haha. What else is new?!
Mom, I'm disappointed that you asked everyone in the fam about Halloween costumes and celebrations but you failed to ask your sister missionary daughter! The nerve. Well, you'll be interested in hearing that I have NEVER celebrated Halloween as much as I have this year. Not even kidding haha. On Saturday night, we went to the Eging's home for dinner. They are the most amazing family ever (minus ours) and they have practically adopted us into their home. I've told you about them before. But anyway, we went over there for a Halloween meal. On the menu: meat on bones (meatballs with water chestnuts in them), brain dip (cauliflower with velveeta cheese dip), claws (breaded chicken fingers with a pepper as a fingernail), mummy dogs (hot dog wrapped in crescent roll), eyeballs (deviled eggs with an olive on it), ghost strawberries (strawberries dipped in white chocolate with faces frosted on) and apple nachos (apples with caramel, peanuts, marshmallows and sprinkles on). Top it all off with a goblin drink (sprite with jello in it) and you're good to go! Most-themed meal I've ever had. We had so much fun. Don't worry, I took pictures of all the food and whenever I get around to making another CD, I'll send ya the pictures :)
But hark! The halloween festivities did not stop there! On Monday night we had a Kirtland Halloween party! All the companionships dressed up, and it was fantastic. OH the costumes were hilarious. Of course, as a disclaimer, it's probably only hilarious to missionaries, haha. but we had spirit paradise and prison, creation of day and night, stick of joseph and judah, the she-bears who ate the 42 kids making fun of the bald prophet in the Old Testament, Joseph and the pillar of light, the lost 116 pages, and the Brother of Jared and the stones. Notice how these are all righteous/wholesome costumes. Sister Debenham and I decided to go another path. We were the Gadiaton Robbers, modernized :) We wore all black, had a t-shirt that had skulls--and hearts??--on it (yes I AM keeping that shirt) and had headbands over our forehead. Then on the back of our shirts we had a poster that said "Got the sign?" haha ohhhh again with the mission humor. Sorry. Basically, Sister Debenham and I walked around like ninjas all night. It was sweet. Then during the costume parade when we made our big entrance, we stole senior couple's cameras, candy etc. It was so fun. Again, I'll send pictures sometime. You won't want to miss out on my sick ninja skills :)
This letter sounds so awful, since I've mentioned nothing yet about missionary work. That's because we've had another really rough week mission-wise. It's been hard, but again, Sister D and I are staying pretty positive. We have a lot of potentials, but not a lot are catching. It's draining. But they are people out there! We just need to find them. I'm getting pretty awesome callouses on my knuckles from knocking all those doors, haha! just kidding. Everyone has doorbells nowadays, so the callouses are clearly on my fingertips.
Thank you for all your prayers. I have felt more uplifted by prayers this week than ever before. Love you all so much and hope everyone is doing well! Keep the faith and be safe!
Love,
Sister Maughan
p.s. Tell Susan Z thank you so much for the package! It was fabulous and made me so happy! I love how all the packages come in shoe boxes, which makes me laugh when I remember her husband is a podiatrist :)
